THE FIXER

“Even when the world falls out of tune, love perseveres.”
Director Brence Platner asked me to design this poster for his short film The Fixer, Pixar-inspired story of an old toymaker grappling with the loss of his wife.
I worked on this poster on-and-off for a few months trying to find the right way into it. The base image of the porcelain doll was a good ‘poster shot’, but taken alone it lacked the whimsy and warmth of the actual film.
So what’s the film really about? Broken toys... missing pieces... love and loss... music and memory. Unlike past posters I’ve done that focused on a single striking image, I decided to try something closer to a collage to tell this old toymaker’s story.
The composition focuses on triangles, using them to guide the eye through the piece. It’s definitely the most intentional I’ve been in designing a comp, pulling elements from other parts of the film and blending them together in new harmony.
